Part 2: America, The Free + The Complex

Monday, March 18, 2013

With Obama getting into power, not only has much changed. Things are more regulated. Also changed is the amount of rhetoric Mr. Achebe spoke about. There are too many interests – the industry incumbents – who have infiltrated the media. While Nigeria’s media could become as lethal as that of pre-1994 genocide Rwanda – it basically has nothing on America’s powerful interest groups. Much of the US$6.2 billion spent on the last election was from special interest groups and their need to maintain the status quo. For instance, if immigration reform becomes law, what happens to all those prison complexes that have mushroomed in different states? What about pay for those illegal workers paid miserable wages? In the same vein, if Nigeria’s oil industry were regularized, how would all those benefiting from siphoning make a living?
