David Crowley Wins Wisconsin Democratic Primary for Governor

David Crowley has secured the Democratic nomination for governor of Wisconsin, defeating state Representative Francesca Hong in a contentious primary. The victory positions Crowley, the Milwaukee County executive, to potentially become the state’s first Black governor.

Crowley’s campaign briefly stalled before he revived it with the backing of outgoing Governor Tony Evers. He successfully framed Hong, a democratic socialist, as a general-election liability. Crowley argued that Republican-aligned groups were secretly funding Hong’s insurgent campaign, calculating that her progressive stances on policing and prisons would make her an easier target in November.

In the general election, Crowley will face Representative Tom Tiffany, a staunch conservative endorsed by Donald Trump who is now pivoting to brand himself as a moderate “everyman.” The gubernatorial race will draw intense national investment as Democrats fight for a governing trifecta in the critical swing state.
