Honoring the Strength and Resilience of African Mothers: Pillars of Family, Community, and Economy

By Mary Alorh
Across the world, mothers have long served as the cornerstone of society – nurturing families, building communities, and shaping futures. In Africa, this role is even more pronounced.
Mothers across the continent are not only the heart of the household but also powerful drivers of economic progress and social stability.
According to the World Bank, approximately 58 percent of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa are owned by women. These businesses span sectors – from agriculture and trade to technology and manufacturing – fueling local economies and fostering innovation.
Economically speaking, African women are the backbone of the continent’s growth, contributing significantly to development and resilience.
Yet, despite their immense contributions, women entrepreneurs in Africa continue to face unique and systemic challenges. One of the most pressing issues is limited access to financial services and capital.
Studies estimate that women-owned SMEs face a financing gap of up to US$50 billion – a staggering figure that underscores the untapped potential waiting to be unlocked.
In times of crisis – be it civil unrest, conflict, or terrorism – it is often African mothers who hold families and communities together. With extraordinary courage, unwavering love, and relentless determination, they raise children, support neighbors, and keep businesses running, even under the most difficult circumstances.
From the bustling stalls of Onitsha Market in Nigeria to the vibrant energy of Marché Tilène in Dakar, Senegal, and the lively hubs of Kejetia and Makola Markets in Ghana, African women traders exemplify resilience and enterprise. Their hard work fuels commerce, sustains livelihoods, and lays the foundation for future prosperity.
On this Mother’s Day, we celebrate the strength, sacrifice, and spirit of mothers everywhere – especially those across Africa whose impact reaches far beyond the home. You are raising the next generation, transforming economies, and inspiring the world.
To every mother: your legacy is felt today, tomorrow, and always.
Happy Mother’s Day.
