Somalia Secures Seat on the United Nations Security Council

By Mary Alorh

Somalia has officially assumed its seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), joining Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, and Panama as one of five new non-permanent members for the 2025-2026 term.

As a key player in the Horn of Africa, Somalia is poised to enhance Africa’s representation in global governance and international diplomacy. A member of the African Union, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Somalia now has the opportunity to influence critical discussions on international conflicts, humanitarian crises, and global security.

With ongoing geopolitical tensions, climate-related challenges, and complex global crises, the UNSC faces an increasingly demanding agenda. For newly elected members, this term presents both significant responsibilities and formidable challenges.

Effective multilateral cooperation will be crucial in navigating these issues. Prioritizing diplomacy and dialogue while addressing the root causes of long-standing conflicts will be essential in fostering global stability.

For Somalia, this appointment marks a historic milestone – one that not only elevates its geopolitical standing but also strengthens Africa’s voice on the world stage. After 54 years, Somalia’s return to the Security Council is a moment of national and continental pride.
