Morgan State University President David K. Wilson has received the esteemed Dr. Frederick S. Humphries Sr. Leadership Award from the HBCU Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) at Clark Atlanta University. The award was presented in June during a ceremony on Clark Atlanta’s campus.

Named after the influential former president of Florida A&M and Tennessee State Universities, the award honors leaders who demonstrate outstanding service, scholarship, and mentorship in support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Since its inception in 2021, it has recognized individuals driving the mission and impact of HBCUs in the United States.

A nationally respected figure in higher education, Wilson has led Morgan State for over a decade, elevating the university’s academic stature and national presence. His leadership has earned him numerous accolades, including the 2023 Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education, membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and board roles with the Lumina Foundation and TIAA.

“I am truly honored to receive an award bearing Dr. Humphries’ name – a visionary who shaped the HBCU landscape,” said Wilson. “This is a recognition of Morgan State’s continued commitment to transforming lives through education. I stand on the shoulders of giants and feel a deep responsibility to mentor the next generation of HBCU leaders.”

The HBCU Executive Leadership Institute prepares future presidents and senior administrators through mentorship, hands-on experience, and leadership training, helping to sustain and strengthen the nation’s more than 100 HBCUs.

Wilson’s recognition highlights his national influence and reaffirms Morgan State’s role as a leader in innovation and student success within the HBCU community.
