Black-Owned Industrial Bank Disrupts Recidivism Through Financial Education
Industrial Bank, a historic Black-owned institution, launched its Beyond Banking initiative in 2016 to provide financial education to incarcerated individuals in Washington, D.C., and beyond. Over 150 participants, some as young as 14, have completed the program.
The eight-session course covers essential financial topics, including banking fundamentals, budgeting, credit management, communication, insurance, investments, entrepreneurship, and homeownership. Graduates receive a certificate upon completion.
Industrial Bank is one of only two U.S. financial institutions allowing incarcerated individuals to open savings, certificate of deposit (CD), and retirement accounts. If permitted by the facility, inmates can transfer funds from their commissary, earn interest, and have fees waived until their release, at which point they gain full account access.
Since launching the initiative, Industrial Bank has opened over 200 accounts for incarcerated individuals, helping them build financial stability for reintegration into society.
