The University of the West Indies (UWI) has climbed into the top three percent of universities worldwide in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, widely considered the gold standard for assessing higher education institutions.

Of more than 33,000 universities globally, only 2,191 from 115 countries qualified for the rankings, which evaluate performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. UWI now ranks within the top 3.6 percent.

Vice-Chancellor Hilary Beckles credited the advancement to disciplined execution of the university’s strategic plan. “The results merely indicate the output of our considerable collective input,” he said, noting significant improvements in research quality and the growing impact of academic publications.

UWI scholars have enhanced both the recognition and influence of their work compared to the previous year, Beckles said, adding that the university continues to exceed expectations despite persistent fiscal constraints.

“I am very proud of this intergenerational achievement, as we look to The UWI’s centenary in 2048,” he said.

The ranking reinforces UWI’s improving position even as the global university landscape expands, positioning the Caribbean institution among an elite tier of academic institutions worldwide.
