Fisk University, a historic Black college, has unveiled a US$900 million campus overhaul that features a 100,000-square-foot data center. President Agenia Clark calls the project “Quantum Leap.”

The plan, pending city approval, includes a sports arena, student center, and annexes for the John Lewis Center for Social Justice and an art gallery. Three dorms will be renovated.

Data centers across the US face fierce local opposition over noise, power strain, and pollution. Clark insists the project will “do no harm.” Asked about a partner for the facility, she declined to comment.

Don Hardin, a construction partner, says Nashville Electric Service has assured sufficient capacity. The 30-megawatt center is “fairly small,” he adds, and will use current tech to limit disruption.

Financing will blend fundraising and project-specific models. “Every piece has a different financial model,” Clark said. The data center won’t subsidize other buildings. Construction will start opportunistically, with the Lewis center annex expected within two years.

“Fisk’s history is here to stay,” Clark said, “but its future is also integral to the city’s next decades.”
