Kenya’s Amina Mohamed on track to head the World Trade Organization (WTO)

Ambassador Amina Mohamed has been recommended for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The post falls vacant on August 31,2013, when incumbent Pascal Lamy’s term as Director-General expires.
According to its’ website, the WTO deals with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.
Ambassador Mohamed currently serves as the UN assistant Secretary-General and deputy executive director of United Nations Environmental Program. If elected to head the WTO, she would be the first African woman to hold the post.
