Burkina Faso Opens First Gold Refinery to Capture Domestic Mining Value

Burkina Faso has inaugurated its first domestic gold refinery, a US$19 million state-backed facility in Ouagadougou designed to retain more value from the country’s most lucrative export. President Ibrahim Traoré opened the Raffinerie Nationale d’Or du Burkina Faso (RAFFINOR-BF), which will initially process 164 tonnes of gold annually, with a second phase targeting 515 tonnes.

Historically, the country exported most of its gold as unrefined doré. The new facility will handle refining, assaying, and certification locally, creating an estimated 100 direct and 5,000 indirect jobs. Gold remains Burkina Faso’s economic anchor, accounting for 94 percent of export earnings in early 2026, following a 2025 output of roughly 101 tonnes across industrial and artisanal operations.

The refinery underscores a broader policy shift under Traoré to localize mineral value chains, complemented by recent measures to raise the state’s free-carried interest in mining projects to 15 percent. The initiative mirrors a wider African push to process raw materials domestically, aiming to transform basic resource extraction into sustained industrial development.
