LeBron James once again captivated the sports world – this time not with a career-altering announcement, but with a cleverly orchestrated marketing campaign that had fans bracing for retirement news.

On Tuesday, the four-time NBA champion teased “The Second Decision,” a callback to his infamous 2010 ESPN special “The Decision,” in which he famously declared, “I’m taking my talents to South Beach.” The new teaser – featuring James walking onto a dimly lit court, sitting across from an unseen figure, and hinting at a major life choice – sparked immediate speculation that the 39-year-old Lakers star might be preparing to hang up his sneakers.

But just an hour before the scheduled 12 p.m. EST reveal, the truth emerged: “The Second Decision” isn’t about basketball at all. Instead, James is partnering with Hennessy on a limited-edition V.S.O.P cognac, dubbed “LeBron James x Hennessy V.S.O.P – The Second Decision.”

The post quickly went viral, with fans reacting to the playful bait-and-switch. James leaned into the joke himself, captioning his social media post with a string of laughing emojis – seemingly acknowledging the retirement rumors he had inadvertently stoked.

Hennessy confirmed the collaboration via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, unveiling the limited-edition bottle set for release this fall. While the move marks another savvy business play for James – whose portfolio includes SpringHill Company, Blaze Pizza, and now premium spirits – it also underscores his enduring cultural influence beyond the hardwood.

For now, Lakers fans can breathe easy: LeBron isn’t retiring. He’s just raising a glass.
