Jamaica Welcomes First Cohort of Ghanaian Nurses

Jamaica has welcomed its first cohort of 43 Ghanaian nurses under a four-year bilateral health agreement designed to strengthen the island-nation’s healthcare workforce and deepen cooperation with Ghana.

The nurses arrived in Kingston on Monday as Jamaica begins implementing an agreement that provides for the voluntary recruitment and temporary deployment of up to 400 Ghanaian healthcare professionals, primarily nurses and doctors.

The nurses, with specialties including critical care, emergency care, oncology, pediatrics, mental health, midwifery and operating-theater care, will serve public hospitals across Jamaica.

Health Minister Christopher Tufton said the deployment would contribute to strengthening Jamaica’s health system. The broader Jamaica-Ghana partnership also covers primary care reform, health insurance and the management of noncommunicable diseases.

The agreement reflects growing Africa-Caribbean cooperation in healthcare, workforce mobility and knowledge sharing.
