FedEx to acquire Supaswift giving in a foothold into Southern Africa

(Ventures Africa) – FedEx Corporation announced Thursday June 20, that it has finalized the first phase of a strategic acquisition of businesses run by its current service provider Supaswift Pty Ltd., in Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa.

FedEx is also in talks to buy Supaswift’s operations in Botswana and Namibia. Once acquired, these operations will operate under the FedEx Express business unit.

“…FedEx Corp will have direct access across the seven markets to 39 facilities and will welcome approximately 1,000 of Supaswift’s team members, who will join the ranks of more than 300,000 FedEx team members globally,” Frederick Smith, chairman of FedEx Corp, said.

“FedEx Express will then offer a complete suite of FedEx branded export, import and domestic solutions, connecting Southern Africa to more than 220 countries and territories worldwide, enhancing customers’ business flexibility and speed to market.”

Smith said the acquisition of Supaswift’s operations will give clients a much greater access to some of the world’s most rapidly growing economies.

“It is an important step in our international growth strategy and further strengthens our FedEx Express portfolio,” Smith said.

FedEx Corp has been active in Africa from the beginning of 1990’s. It has done so through a well-established network of Global Service Providers.
