The University of the West Indies (UWI) has officially launched its newest initiative, the International School for Development Justice (ISDJ).

According to UWI, the ISDJ is the world’s first global business school exclusively dedicated to offering online graduate programs focused on leadership in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the hybrid launch event held at UWI’s Global Campus Headquarters in Barbados, Vice-Chancellor Professor Hilary Beckles emphasized that the ISDJ is a pivotal component of UWI’s revenue generation strategy as part of its current strategic plan. He explained that the project received substantial funding from IDB Invest, with one of the conditions being that the ISDJ be registered as a private limited liability company, operating under the traditional framework of a corporation with a board of directors. “That is what we have done,” Beckles stated.

He further noted, “ISDJ Inc. is officially registered in Barbados under the Companies Act, marking the creation of UWI’s first inter-campus and major financial corporation.”

In her keynote speech, Trinidad & Tobago’s Education Minister Nyan Gadsby-Dolly praised the school’s bold initiative, stating that it demonstrates the Caribbean’s determination to be present in all sectors on the global stage. She described the ISDJ as both “a revolution and a solution,” adding that the project’s research-driven approach offers strong hope and a real expectation of success from regional governments.

Elizabeth Robberechts, IDB Invest’s Lead Investor, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, calling it a “ground-breaking initiative in global education.” She commended the partnership between IDB Invest and The UWI, noting that it exemplifies the power of strategic alliances in transforming education.

Professor Justin Robinson, Principal of UWI Five Islands Campus and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Industry Partnerships, led the project as its coordinator, developing the business plan, shared services model, and financial framework. He expressed deep gratitude to IDB Invest for their commitment in turning the ISDJ from a visionary concept into a viable project capable of generating significant returns for UWI.

UWI’s Global Campus, renowned for its excellence in online education, will play a vital role in the ISDJ’s operations. Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal Francis Severin emphasized that the school, while based within the Global Campus, is supported by all of UWI’s campuses and serves as a powerful example of collaborative effort within the university.

Sandrea Maynard, UWI’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Global Affairs and CEO of the ISDJ, chaired the launch ceremony. She noted that the ISDJ’s curriculum uniquely integrates a variety of disciplines. Among its offerings are Master’s degrees in Climate Studies, Gender Justice, Activism and Sustainable Development, Global Sport, and Reparative Justice.

Starting in January 2025, the ISDJ will offer flexible online learning options, including one-year Master’s programs, Certificates, Diplomas, and micro-credentials, along with workforce development and executive courses.

The ISDJ’s curriculum aligns with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to combine sustainability, social justice, and environmental responsibility with modern business practices. Its mission is to lead the way in fusing these values with innovative business education.
