St. Lucia set to introduce landmark minimum wage
The government of St. Lucia is making notable progress toward establishing a more equitable job market by introducing a new minimum wage.
This initiative, led by Prime Minister Pierre and his team, aims to improve the living standards of the working-class population in the country.
To address income inequalities, the Minimum and Equal Wages Commission was established in 2022.
Under Prime Minister Pierre’s leadership, the commission worked closely with local employers and labor unions through extensive consultations to determine an appropriate minimum wage rate.
For the first time, workers in St. Lucia will receive a legislatively mandated minimum wage. Employees will be guaranteed a minimum monthly wage of EC$1,126 (US$416.71), which equates to EC$52 (US$19.24) daily or EC$6.50 (US$2.41) per hour.
This policy is expected to benefit nearly 13,000 individuals by increasing their earnings.
The introduction of the minimum wage marks the beginning of a series of policy measures aimed at reducing poverty and strengthening the workforce.
These initiatives are designed to ensure that all citizens of St. Lucia can achieve a dignified standard of living.
Before the official enactment of the Minimum and Living Wage Bill on August 1, 2024, the government is seeking input from the public.
