Jamaica mandates AI training for public sector
Jamaica will introduce mandatory artificial intelligence (AI) training for government employees as part of a broader push to modernize public services and improve efficiency.
The initiative, announced at the 11th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference in Montego Bay, will be implemented across ministries, departments, and agencies. Trevor Forrest, a senior advisor in the Office of the Prime Minister, said the program aims to equip public-sector workers with a clear understanding of AI, including its applications and ethical considerations.
Officials say the policy is designed to accelerate adoption of digital tools while addressing concerns among workers about job displacement. By improving AI literacy, the government hopes to boost operational efficiency and enhance service delivery.
The move forms part of Jamaica’s wider strategy to prepare its workforce and institutions for an increasingly digital economy, with a focus on responsible and effective use of emerging technologies.
