Spelman College, the historically Black liberal arts institution in Atlanta, Georgia, has been ranked number one in Newsweek’s “America’s Best Colleges for Women 2026.” The list evaluates schools on leadership, pay and policies, campus safety, and opportunity – measures designed to help prospective students identify institutions that actively support women’s success.

Spelman earned top marks across all four categories, underscoring its enduring mission to cultivate women leaders in equitable, secure, and inclusive academic settings. In a statement, the college called the recognition “a tremendous honor” and reaffirmed its commitment to access, leadership development, and campus safety, highlighting its global legacy in educating women of African descent.

Newsweek developed the ranking in partnership with Gender Fair, a company founded by Amy Cross to “unleash women’s consumer power” by rating organizations on gender parity and accountability. The methodology draws from the United Nations’ Women’s Empowerment Principles and U.S. federal data, including the Department of Education’s IPEDS and Campus Safety and Security databases.

Additional context comes from the Center for Reproductive Rights, assessing how state and local policies may affect students’ lived experiences.

The ranking serves as a strategic resource for women navigating higher education choices in an era demanding greater transparency and equity.
