New Ebola vaccines may start trials soon in Uganda, WHO says

Bloomberg | Two vaccines being developed to treat the type of Ebola that’s killed 29 people in Uganda may start clinical trials in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

Several inoculations are in various stages of development against the virus, the UN health body said in a statement Wednesday. Vaccines used successfully to curb a recent outbreak of the disease in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo aren’t effective against the type of virus currently prevalent in Uganda, it said.

Uganda has recorded 63 confirmed and probable cases of Ebola in 4 districts since an outbreak began on September 20, the WHO said. While there isn’t a cure for the disease, early detection of cases and treatment of symptoms greatly increases chances of survival.
