MTN Uganda launches new switching and Data center

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

This launch comes as MTN has just celebrated 14 years of operation in Uganda. Over the years, MTN has been consistent in its investment in both infrastructure as well as social development in the country.

MTN has introduced a number of innovative services that have changed the face of the telecommunications industry. One of these noteworthy services is the revolutionary MTN Mobile Money service (M-PESA).

MTN Uganda has, over the last two years, made major investments in Uganda. The company launched the first mobile money service in the country with tremendous success. It introduced 3G+, expanded its distribution footprint, and greatly enhanced its core, radio capacity and infrastructure technology. Furthermore, it extended the fiber network infrastructure and built regional switching centers in the East, West, North and Central regions.

In terms of infrastructure, this year MTN Uganda will have an additional 600km of fibre infrastructure completed and close to 2,600km of fibre by the end of 2012. This will provide capacity for high speed data connectivity and wider national coverage of 3G and 4G mobile data services that extend internet access to the rural areas of Uganda.
