More youth in Jamaica turning to entrepreneurship as unemployment lingers – JDBC

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Entrepreneurship in Jamaica is on the rise – and this partly fueled by a persistently high unemployment rate – national unemployment currently stands at 14 percent while youth unemployment is at 37 percent.

According to Harold Davis the deputy CEO of the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC), there has been increased activity in accessing the services provided by the corporation by the country’s youth – an indicator many are taking the entrepreneurial route.

The JBDC has hosted some 3,350 persons at 134 training workshops conducted this year in areas such as business management, business formalization, financial management and business plan writing, through which 2,354 potential entrepreneurs were screened for assistance with the development of their ideas and issues relating to start-up and existing business operations.
