Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf elected to chair African Peer Review Mechanism

Liberia’s president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has been elected Chairperson of the African Peer Review Mechanism by African leaders have acceded to be part of the same mechanism.

The African Peer Review Mechanism founded in 2003 is an instrument created by African Union leaders to encourage conformity in regard to political, economic and corporate governance values, codes, ethics and standards. It allows participating countries to peer review each other on governance structures and it is one of the measures African countries adopted to promote democratic and accountable government.

Ms. Johnson was elected during a meeting on the fringes of the African Union Summit, she takes over leadership of the African Peer Review Mechanism from the Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, who now chairs the African Union.
