Jamaica Raises Minimum Wage
Jamaica’s lower house approved a minimum-wage increase to J$17,000 (US$107) per 40-hour week, effective July 1st. The current rate is J$16,000 (US$101).
The hourly base rate rises to J$425 (US$2.69), from J$400. Overtime and holiday premium pay will scale accordingly. Industrial security guards are included under the new floor, while retaining existing benefits.
Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. urged employers to treat the minimum as a starting point, not a cap. The wage has nearly tripled since 2016, when it stood at J$6,200 (US$39). The government framed the move as both relief for low-income workers and a reaffirmation of its commitment to earnings growth.
