Potential 7-Billion-Barrel Oil Prospect Identified Off Jamaica

Offshore exploration in Jamaican waters has detected hydrocarbons consistent with a substantial petroleum system, United Oil & Gas reported this week. Analysis of seabed samples from the Walton-Morant license suggests thermogenic gas – a key indicator of deep-source oil and gas deposits.

The company’s Seabed Geochemical Exploration survey identified C4 and C5 hydrocarbons, including butane and pentane, in multiple piston-core samples. Unlike shallow biogenic gas, these heavier compounds typically originate from mature petroleum systems formed under heat and pressure over geologic time.

Findings reinforce prior evidence of hydrocarbons in the region, including satellite-detected seeps, onshore oil shows, and legacy well data. The 2026 survey integrated 3D seismic mapping, seabed imaging, and satellite analytics to target sampling more precisely.

United Oil & Gas will incorporate results into geological models to assess drilling viability and engage potential partners for exploration funding. CEO Brian Larkin called the data “an important input” toward a future drilling decision.

The Walton-Morant block holds an estimated 7 billion barrels of prospective resources – unproven potential pending further technical evaluation.

While encouraging, the discovery remains preliminary. Additional appraisal is required before any commercial drilling proceeds.
