Haiti’s PM Vows December Elections Will Proceed “No Matter What”
Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, has pledged that long-delayed presidential and legislative elections will occur in 2026. “No matter what,” he said during a visit to the South Department, urging citizens to register.
The electoral council schedules the first round for December 13, alongside a constitutional referendum. A second round and local polls are set for February 21, 2027. The country has not held a national vote since Jovenel Moïse’s election in 2016; he was assassinated in 2021.
Seventeen political groups are approved to run. Registration closes Friday. The council has added 36 new centers in the West Department and will assess diaspora voting in the U.S., Canada, France, Chile, and Brazil.
Officials, including the youth minister, are pushing young Haitians to enroll. Fils-Aimé also met with Cardinal Chibly Langlois to discuss religious groups’ role in national dialogue. The government calls for unity as the vote approaches.
