Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has revealed ambitious plans for a meaningful tribute, unveiling a partnership with a Cuban foundation to erect sculpted busts in honor of former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and his comrades who tragically perished on October 19, 1983.

Fresh from his official journey to Cuba, Prime Minister Mitchell disclosed that these busts will serve as a poignant focal point during the upcoming National Heroes Day celebrations on October 19 of this year.

Last October marked the inaugural observance of National Heroes Day in Grenada, coinciding with the solemn 40th anniversary of Bishop’s assassination.

Bishop, the pioneering left-wing leader of Grenada, along with several members of his cabinet, fell victim to a treacherous palace coup, resulting in the collapse of the People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG).

The absence of a tangible memorial has long been a poignant absence in Grenada’s collective memory, lending profound significance to this initiative as a symbol of enduring remembrance.
