Former Trinidad & Tobago PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar to receive “Women of Distinction” award

Trinidad & Tobago’s opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is to receive the Women of Distinction Award at an event in the Bahamas on Saturday, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Leader of the opposition.

It said that Persad-Bissessar, who led a coalition People’s Partnership government in Trinidad & Tobago from 2010 to 2015, will be presented with the 2017 ‘Women of Distinction’ Award, at the Celebrating Women International’s 2017 Awards Presentation and Gala Reception in Nassau.

The statement noted that she is being recognized for “her leadership, outstanding involvement in the community and the positive and inspirational example that she set for women and young girls everywhere”.

“In selecting the recipients of this award, the organizers indicated that Persad-Bissessar was chosen because of the commitment she has shown throughout her professional life to working to improve the lives of people,” the statement noted.

Celebrating Women International is a non-profit organisation which aims to mobilize and inspire women across the globe to honor, recognize and celebrate the contributions of women, the statement said.

Others who have received the award include Dame Pearlette Louisy – Governor General of St. Lucia; Dame Cecile La Grenada, head of state in Grenada; and former Jamaica Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller. -(CMC)
