CARICOM set to create a framework for sustainable ocean management
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) recently announced significant advancements in ocean governance and sustainable marine resource management efforts.
The regional organization has initiated a robust program focused on building a sustainable ocean management framework.
Named “Towards A Caribbean Community Framework for Strengthening Oceans Governance – Effective Engagement in the International Oceans Agenda,” this initiative aims to collaboratively develop a CARICOM Blue Economy Policy.
“This initiative underscores CARICOM’s dedication to fostering a sustainable blue economy that benefits all member states, recognizing the crucial role of the Caribbean Sea in the region’s development goals,” stated David Prendergast, Director of Sectoral Programmes at the CARICOM Secretariat.
The primary objective of the project is to establish a policy that strengthens governance, improves regional coordination, and enhances member states’ ability to sustainably manage their marine resources. The policy will build on global efforts promoting sustainable ocean economies, such as the Antigua & Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Commonwealth Blue Charter.
Furthermore, the project intends to leverage national progress achieved through the UK’s Sustainable Marine Economies Programme.
“CARICOM member states are increasingly focusing on their exclusive economic zones (EEZs) to unlock development opportunities in sectors like fisheries, energy, ecotourism, and coastal and ocean services such as carbon sequestration,” added the CARICOM Secretariat.
In the coming months, the project will involve an in-depth review of policies and the institutional and legal frameworks within CARICOM states regarding sustainable ocean economies.
The initiative will also include a series of virtual and in-person consultations to engage stakeholders, showcase national progress, and outline priority actions for the region. -(CMC)
