A government official says Cameroon’s parliament has adopted a new law allowing citizens living overseas to vote in the country’s upcoming presidential election.
Interior Minister Marafa Hamidou Yaya said late Sunday that Cameroonians settled abroad can now participate in the vote slated for October.
The move could step up pressure on Paul Biya, who has been in power for nearly three decades.
The country’s main opposition party had threatened to disrupt elections if the change wasn’t made.
The government estimates that as many as 5 million Cameroonians reside in other countries.
Biya has been president since 1982 and changed the constitution so he can run again this year.
