Brewing Up Business: Ghanaian Cocoa Firm Sets U.S. Investment Record in Wisconsin
Wisconsin is trading its cheese for cocoa. Following a trade mission led by Governor Tony Evers, Niche Cocoa Processing – a firm based in Tema, Ghana – is expanding into the American Midwest.
The move represents the largest foreign direct investment by an African enterprise in the history of the U.S. food and beverage sector.
The four-day delegation, organized with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, brought together Ghanaian officials and included tours of local agricultural and healthcare facilities. Yet the mission’s most striking outcome is the reversal of traditional capital flows.
Rather than Western capital flowing into Africa, Niche Cocoa’s expansion underscores the growing scale and confidence of African companies investing directly in mature Western consumer markets.
What merits attention is the direction of that capital: instead of the usual Western-to-Africa investment, a Ghanaian firm is scaling into a mature U.S. market at a record level. That reversal makes this a business-case study in confidence and competitiveness – not merely a diplomatic headline.
