Ava DuVernay, the first Black Woman to be nominated for Best Director Golden Globe
Ava DuVernay, has been nominated for a best director Golden Globe.
DuVernay, 42, who directed the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic Selma, is the first black woman to be nominated for this award.
The best director award has been given since 1943, and yet, only one woman, Barbra Streisand, has won.
DuVernay’s nomination comes at a time when women directors are still struggling for acceptance at the highest level of the business.
The nomination presents DuVernay with more visibility on a global scale. Her previous movie, Middle of Nowhere, had a budget of US$200,000 and it won her the best director award at Sundance. Selma – whose script she re-wrote, on the other hand, had a budget of US$20 million where she partnered with Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt.
