Renowned actress Angela Bassett has been announced as the keynote speaker for Spelman College’s upcoming commencement ceremony, as confirmed by the college.

In addition to delivering the keynote address, Bassett will be bestowed with an honorary doctor of fine arts degree.

The commencement ceremony is slated to take place on Sunday, May 19 at 3 p.m. at the Georgia International Convention Center.

At 65 years old, Bassett’s illustrious career recently garnered her a Golden Globe award in 2022 for her portrayal in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” a film shot in metro Atlanta.

Further distinguished figures to be recognized during the event include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson, who will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree, and Atlanta journalist Rose Scott, who will be honored with a national community service award. Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder is set to deliver the address during the baccalaureate ceremony on May 18 at 10 a.m.

Helene D. Gayle PhD., President of Spelman College, expressed the institution’s deep honor in hosting Angela Bassett as the speaker for the graduating Class of 2024. She emphasized Bassett’s significant impact, both on and off-screen, serving as a beacon of inspiration for students as they step into leadership roles.

She also underscored the privilege of welcoming a cadre of influential Black women to the weekend’s ceremonies, including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Atlanta community stalwart Rose Scott, and the esteemed Reverend Yvette Flunder. Their presence is anticipated to uplift not only the graduates but also their families and the broader Spelman community.
