Zimbabwe: Mnangagwa sets general election set for July

Zimbabwe’s new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, said on Wednesday the country would go to elections by July and that he would respect the result if the opposition won power.

Mnangagwa, 75, who took office after long-term ruler Robert Mugabe was forced to resign, informed the World Economic Forum that Mugabe would not have immunity from prosecution.

The new administration now requires cabinet ministers and senior government officials to declare their assets. Mnangagwa insists that this will foster transparency and fight corruption.

All officials will be required to disclose details on their real estate, other property valued above US$100,000, and shareholdings in businesses by February 28.

According to Misheck Sibanda, the chief secretary to cabinet, the president expects the full and urgent cooperation of all the affected office bearers.
The new administration is trying to break with past policies of Mugabe in a bid to lure investment and in turn jumpstart the country’s economy.
