Trinidad & Tobago Jolted by Moderate Earthquake

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday afternoon, rattling parts of the twin-island nation but causing no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

According to the Seismic Research Centre (SRC) at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), the quake occurred at 4:20 p.m. local time. It was centered at coordinates 11.26°N latitude and 61.40°W longitude, with a focal depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles).

The SRC reported that the tremor was felt approximately 67 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of the capital, Port of Spain; 70 kilometers (42 miles) northwest of Arima; and 73 kilometers (44 miles) west of Scarborough in Tobago.

While there were no immediate impacts reported, the SRC continues to monitor seismic activity across the region.
