South Africa: More labor unrest as NUMSA to begin stoppage July 1
NUMSA also wants a bargaining agreement of one year and a ban on the use of labor brokers, according to its statement. The union has also deadlocked over wages with with state-owned Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., which provides more than 95 percent of South Africa’s power and where its members are deemed to be essential-services workers, meaning they can’t go on strike.
NUMSA is demanding a one-year agreement and across-the-board increases of 12 percent at the utility. An offer of 5.6 percent has been rejected, Cloete said.
