In May, Haiti underwent a notable surge in seismic activity, detecting over 60 earthquakes across the nation. These tremors exhibited varying degrees of intensity, ranging from 1.1 to 3.3 on the Richter scale, marking a month of significant geological unrest.

Data gathered by seismic networks in neighboring Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic unveiled that most of these tremors were mild, with sixty-three earthquakes measuring at a magnitude of three or lower. Additionally, a considerable portion of these quakes occurred at shallow depths, within 10 kilometers (6 miles) or less beneath the surface, making their impact more palpable on land.

The distribution of these earthquakes revealed a concerning trend, with 20 of them taking place at sea. Notably, seven marine quakes were situated along Haiti’s northern fault line, prompting concerns about potential tsunamis given specific oceanographic and geological factors.

The seismic activity was not evenly spread across the country. The North-West department recorded the highest number with 21 earthquakes, trailed by the West department with 18. The Nippes and the South-East departments also experienced significant activity, logging 10 and seven earthquakes, respectively. This variance underscores the differing seismic susceptibilities within Haiti’s regions.

Haiti’s frequent seismic occurrences stem from its location on a major fault line, where the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates converge. These colossal segments of the Earth’s crust slide past each other over time, creating conditions conducive to earthquakes.
