Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is signaling a potential return to the political spotlight, hinting at a possible run for Georgia governor in 2026. During an appearance at the prestigious Leading Women Defined Summit on Thursday night, Bottoms confirmed she is seriously considering a bid for the state’s highest office.

Speaking to an exclusive audience of influential Black women leaders at the summit, Bottoms revealed her plans to formally announce her candidacy soon. According to attendees, the former mayor shared her vision for Georgia during the April 3, 2025, event, emphasizing the need for leadership that prioritizes the urgent needs of communities across the state.

Bottoms, who served as a senior advisor to former US President Joe Biden and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement before stepping away from national politics, has maintained a relatively low profile since leaving Atlanta City Hall in 2022. However, she has remained a prominent voice in discussions around voting rights, police reform, and economic equity – issues she says are critical to Georgia’s future.

In an exclusive statement to BET, Bottoms invoked the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., saying, “There is a ‘fierce urgency of now.’ For the people of Georgia, that means having leaders who aren’t blindly following divisive ideologies or outdated policies but are instead focused on addressing the pressing challenges facing our communities.”

She continued, “I’ve previously shared that I’m seriously considering a run for governor, and I expect to make a formal announcement soon. This is about ensuring Georgia has leadership that reflects its values and prioritizes progress over partisanship.”

If Bottoms enters the race, she will be vying to succeed Governor Brian Kemp, who is term-limited after serving two consecutive terms. Kemp’s tenure has been marked by both economic growth and controversy, particularly over his stances on voting rights and education policy.

Bottoms’ potential candidacy could reshape the political landscape in Georgia, offering voters a clear alternative rooted in her advocacy for equity, justice, and community-driven solutions.

As speculation builds, Bottoms’ announcement has sparked excitement among her supporters, who see her as a unifying figure capable of bridging divides and championing progressive change. With her deep roots in Georgia politics and her national profile bolstered by her work in the Biden administration, Bottoms could emerge as a formidable contender in the 2026 gubernatorial race.

The question remains: Will Keisha Lance Bottoms take the plunge and step back onto the political stage? One thing is certain – her decision will have significant implications for Georgia’s future.
