Members of Citizens United to Reduce Electricity (CURE) along with attorney-at-law Hugh Wildman and Senator Dennis Meadows have announced a three-pronged approach to break the monopoly of the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS).
The group’s actions include the filing of a court case.
The law governing the granting of electricity contracts, unchanged on the books since 1890, suggests that many “licensees” may in fact be awarded contracts.
Meadows argued that a solution rests in the “separation of transmission from generation,” an idea put forward in the past by former prime minister Edward Seaga. Meadows warned, however: “This is going to cost money.”
CURE members Dickie Crawford and Betty-Ann Blaine made an impassioned plea for Jamaicans to support the intended legal action. This support, with the necessary cooperation of energy experts, rounds out the three prongs of CURE’s trident.
