Grenada’s Parliament plans to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) tools in 2025, aiming to encourage legislators to fully leverage the technology, according to Speaker Leo Cato’s announcement on Tuesday.

“Next year, we will actively promote the use of AI among our parliamentarians,” Cato stated during a parliamentary session. “We will procure the necessary tools and provide training to support this initiative.”

Although specific details were not disclosed, Cato emphasized that integrating AI was a key recommendation from the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), held in Australia earlier this month.

Cato shared three major takeaways from the conference, which focused on the theme “Engage, Empower, Sustain: Charting the Course for Resilient Democracy.

  • Commonwealth Parliaments must adopt measures and support systems to enhance the effectiveness of parliamentarians.
  • Parliaments should embrace innovation to strengthen governance while respecting traditional practices and local contexts.
  • Technological solutions should be integrated to foster inclusive participation, particularly for individuals with disabilities.

Cato highlighted that the CPC workshops covered a range of topics, including AI applications in governance, parliamentary security, combating human trafficking, anti-discrimination policies, and improving inclusion for LGBT+ individuals, people with disabilities, and indigenous communities.

The Westminster Foundation for Democracy has identified several potential applications of AI in parliaments, such as transcribing and translating discussions, managing debate records, and generating subtitles for video content. -(CMC)
