Bahamas Opposition leader supports term limits for Prime Minister
Michael Pintard, leader of the main opposition Free National Movement (FNM), has voiced his support for establishing term limits for the office of Prime Minister.
During a local radio talk show on Wednesday, Pintard highlighted the need for changes in the political structure of the Bahamas.
He emphasized that the FNM’s internal caucus must discuss implementing fixed election dates. Pintard believes that having predictable election dates is crucial for the electoral system, while also allowing for flexibility to handle unforeseen circumstances.
Looking ahead to the next general election, Pintard confirmed his readiness to participate in leadership debates. This stance contrasts with the previous election cycle, where current Prime Minister Philip Davis was prepared to debate then-Prime Minister Hubert Minnis, who declined.
Before the last general election, the University of The Bahamas and Verizon Media Group hosted a series of pre-election debates. All major parties participated, except for the Free National Movement.
