The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming Africa’s film and creative industries: the launch of a US$1 billion Africa Film Fund.

Announced through its development impact investment arm, the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), this landmark initiative is set to revolutionize the production, financing, and global reach of African storytelling.

The fund will provide critical financial support to African filmmakers, covering key stages including production, post-production, distribution, and exhibition of high-quality films and television series. By doing so, it aims to empower African creatives to produce content that competes on the world stage while building a stronger, more sustainable creative ecosystem across the continent.

More than just an investment in entertainment, the Africa Film Fund is positioned as a powerful catalyst for cultural sovereignty, job creation, and enhanced global influence for Africa in the international creative economy. Afreximbank emphasized these goals in a recent social media announcement, underscoring the broader economic and cultural ambitions behind the initiative.

This move aligns with Afreximbank’s commitment – announced during the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX WKND 2024) in Algiers – to deploy patient capital that nurtures talent, supports innovation, and drives long-term growth in the creative sector.

With Africa’s film and audiovisual industry already generating over US$5 billion annually and employing more than five million people, the new fund is poised to unlock even greater value across the entire creative value chain, positioning Africa as a formidable force in global entertainment.
