Today is election day in St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

Voters started casting their votes to choose a new government at 07:00 local time (06:00 EST), with the main political parties confident of landslide victories. The polls will close at 17:00 local time (16:00 EST).

The incumbent Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, and his governing United Labor Party (ULP), is seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive term in office, however, the main opposition party – the New Democratic Party (NDP) – led by Arnhim Eustace believe they have what it takes to soundly beat the ULP at the polls.

The latest opinion polls, have indicated it will either be a tight race or that Gonsalves and his ULP will once again form the government.

The Electoral Office says 89,527 people are registered to vote in the elections that are being observed by Organization of American States (OAS) and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) missions.

A total of 43 candidates from 4 political parties have been nominated to contest the poll.

A full slate of 15 candidates have been nominated by the incumbent ULP and the NDP, while the SVG Green Party is fielding 7 candidates, and 6 are representing the Democratic Republican Party. -(CMC)
