South Sudan unveils plan to restart oil production
South Sudan announced plans to produce at least 90,000 barrels of crude oil daily as it resumes normal production, following the lifting of a suspension caused by Sudan’s conflict. The country relies on oil for 90 percent of its gross domestic product.
Production was halted for 11 months after Sudan invoked a force majeure clause during the conflict in early 2023. The suspension ended on January 4, 2025, allowing South Sudan to restart oil exports.
Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol stated that production will officially resume on January 8, 2025. “This is our ‘D-Day’ we’ve been waiting for,” he said. Chol emphasized that South Sudan will continue leveraging its oil resources despite global shifts toward green energy.
