Union officials say South African gold miners will return to work this evening after ending a five-day strike.

Spokesman Lesiba Seshoka says the mining unions reached a consensus with the country’s Chamber of Mines on Tuesday for a wage increase of up to 8 percent and on other conditions of employment.

More than 250,000 South African gold miners went on strike late Thursday seeking higher wages and a cut of profits from soaring gold prices.

Analysts estimated that the strike could have cost the companies up to $25 million a day in lost production.

Miners from the coal sector returned to work Monday after a six-day strike over pay and working conditions, while workers continued to strike at diamond giant DeBeers for a 12th day.
