Ronald Venetiaan, a defining figure in Suriname’s democratic journey and its president for three non-consecutive terms, has died at the age of 89. His family confirmed his passing on November 5, 2025.

Widely revered for his integrity and intellect, Venetiaan was lauded by President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons as “a statesman and a great son of the nation” whose legacy spans education, democratic governance, and national unity. Former president Chan Santokhi, who served as Venetiaan’s justice minister, called his death “a profound loss for Suriname.”

Born in Paramaribo in 1936, Venetiaan earned a degree in mathematics in the Netherlands before returning home to teach. After Suriname’s independence in 1975, he became minister of education – only to be ousted in the 1980 military coup led by Dési Bouterse. He retreated to academia, teaching at Anton de Kom University, until democracy’s restoration in 1987 brought him back into politics as leader of the National Party of Suriname (NPS).

Venetiaan was first elected president in 1991, then again in 2000 and 2005, steering the country through a period of post-coup consolidation and institutional rebuilding. A committed educator and reformer, he prioritized public education and transparent governance throughout his tenure.

Beyond politics, Venetiaan was a published poet – writing under the pseudonyms Vene and Krumanty – and co-authored Chan Santokhi’s 2020 book We gaan Suriname redden (“We Are Going to Save Suriname”).

He retired from public life in 2013, urging younger leaders to take the reins. He is survived by his wife, Liesbeth Vanenburg, three daughters, and a son.
