Robert F. Smith is now the second richest African American after Oprah Winfrey who still occupies the top spot.
Smith is the founder, CEO and chairman of Vista Equity Partners, a Texas-based private equity firm with US$15.9 billion in assets.
He is is ranked No. 268 on the Forbes list with a net worth of US$2.5 billion.
