Montserrat to conduct General Election on October 24
The citizens of Montserrat will head to the polls on October 24 to elect a new government, following the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly on Thursday. The date for Nomination Day has not yet been announced.
“Today represents a significant moment in Montserrat’s history as we officially dissolve the current government, setting the stage for the upcoming elections. I am privileged to assume the leadership of the Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP), succeeding the honorable Joseph E. Taylor-Farrell, who has led our island with unwavering dedication as Premier over the last five years,” said Samuel Joseph.
In the general election held on November 18, 2019, the MCAP secured five out of the nine available seats. Montserrat operates as a single nine-member constituency, where voters can select up to nine candidates on their ballot using a plurality-at-large voting system.
To be elected, candidates must secure at least 6 percent of the vote. If fewer than nine candidates meet this threshold, a second round of voting will be conducted within 21 days.
Political analysts predict that MCAP will face a strong challenge in the upcoming election, particularly from the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), led by outgoing Opposition Leader Paul Lewis, and the United Alliance, headed by former Premier Reuben Meade, which has already released its manifesto.
In his remarks, Joseph commended the outgoing government, stating, “As we look toward the future, our journey will not be without difficulties, but I am prepared to face them with a bold and proactive approach.”
He highlighted pressing issues such as the rising cost of living, access to utilities, the need for better education, and higher wages, all of which require immediate and focused attention.
“Our goal is to rebuild Montserrat – not just to restore it, but to exceed its former prosperity when we thrived without financial aid, driven by patriotism, resilience, and determination. By prioritizing sustainable development and social progress, we will move ‘Forward Together’ as a united community.”
The ruling party unveiled its list of nine candidates for the election on Thursday night, including six newcomers, with Joseph urging the public for their support.
“I ask for your trust and support. Together, we can overcome the challenges before us and seize the opportunities that lie ahead. With my strong and decisive leadership, alongside a dedicated team, we will chart a course towards a prosperous and flourishing Montserrat, where every citizen has the opportunity to succeed.”
