Jamaica & Guyana lead the Caribbean in increased sugar production
Chairman of the Sugar Association of the Caribbean (SAC), Karl James, says after a slow start to the 2013/2014 sugar crop, the production of sugar in the Caribbean is gaining momentum. According to the SAC, Jamaica led the way in regional sugar production in March with 37,990 tons, followed closely by Guyana with 37,794 tons.
Belize recorded production of 23,767 tons and Barbados totaled 1,788 tons. The SAC says for the current crop, the region has supplied 151,527 tons of sugar to the European Union; 5,570 tons to the Caribbean market and 2,552 tons to other markets. Rain had delayed the start of the crop in Barbados and Belize and interrupted production in Jamaica and Guyana. However, the SAC noted that since then, with improved weather, all four industries are now in production and productivity has improved.
