Jamaica Deploys Ghanaian Engineers and Doctors for Hurricane Recovery
Jamaica has welcomed a contingent of 49 military engineers and five doctors from Ghana to aid recovery from Hurricane Melissa, which struck on October 28. The team arrived in Kingston late last week.
Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith formally received the group, thanking Ghana for its swift response to Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s request. “This deployment demonstrates the depth of our long-standing partnership,” Johnson Smith stated, noting diplomatic ties dating to 1968.
Ghanaian President John Mahama authorized the mission, framing it as an act of international solidarity and a reinforcement of diaspora links. Contingent leader Colonel Emanuel Asia emphasized the historical connection, citing bonds since Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, in the 1950s. “We are here to work together,” Asia said.
The engineers will assist with critical rebuilding, while the medical team will support storm-affected communities. Hurricane Melissa caused extensive damage across multiple parishes, prompting this direct international support for Jamaica’s reconstruction efforts.
