India based cell phone company hits the 50 million subscriber mark in Africa

Indian mobile firm Bharti Airtel Wednesday said its subscribers in Africa, where it acquired business in 15 countries in a US$9 billion deal in June last year , has crossed the 50 million mark.

Bharti operates in 19 countries across Asia and Africa, including Kenya and is the world’s fifth biggest mobile operator by subscribers.

Mr Manoj Kohli, the chief executive Bharti Airtel, said the firm is targeting to have 100 million African customers by end of end of March 2013.

“This milestone demonstrates our continued dedication and commitment to Africa,” said Mr Kohli.
