Idris Elba envisions constructing a city in Sierra Leone
Renowned for his notable performances in acclaimed series such as The Wire and Luther, British actor Idris Elba is embarking on a new venture: the development of a smart, eco-friendly city on an island in Sierra Leone. With roots tracing back to his father’s homeland in the West African country, Elba envisions a city that challenges prevailing perceptions of Africa. In an interview with the BBC, he expressed his vision of creating a self-sufficient economy that fosters growth and prosperity.
Teaming up with his business partner, Siaka Stevens – grandson of the former Sierra Leonean president of the same name, who shares Elba’s upbringing in London – the duo envisions a city that could accommodate up to a million residents and host various businesses. Their target location is Sherbro Island, a 600-square-kilometer (232-square-mile) expanse situated two hours away from the coast, where approximately 40,000 inhabitants sustain themselves primarily through fishing, rice cultivation, and modest tourism.
This ambitious project unfolds in one of the world’s most economically challenged nations, adding layers of intrigue to its scope. Stevens likened the potential of Sherbro Island to Hong Kong’s relationship with China, emphasizing its strategic importance in the West African market. Central to their plans is a pioneering governance model, characterized by a unique public-private partnership with the Sierra Leonean government.
The transformation of Sherbro Island involves the establishment of a special economic zone, complete with an independent economic and legal framework managed by the private sector.
